City of Tuscaloosa Holds Burrell Odom Park Ribbon Cutting
April 23, 2025
The City of Tuscaloosa held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Burrell Odom Park on Wednesday, April 23 at 10 a.m.
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, Councilor Matthew Wilson and former Councilor Phyllis Odom spoke during the ceremony.
"We're in a time and space where it does feel like opposing forces are keeping anything from getting done, but not here in Tuscaloosa, Alabama,” Mayor Walt Maddox said. “To think 573 days ago we walked around this park and today we're cutting the ribbon on something that I believe is built to serve generations that come through this community."
The new Burrell Odom Park, an Elevate Tuscaloosa project, will include a variety of amenities and lighting and security features. Among these are a new basketball court, a new walking track and two new playgrounds.
"Dreams do come true. Ten years ago, this park was renamed Burrell Odom Park from West End Park and what we saw ten years ago we don't see today," Councilor Matthew Wilson said. "We're grateful and thankful to Mr. Robert Amason and Amason & Associates for their timely work and detail to make sure that the people of the West End community will have a park to call their own and I'm proud of it.”
Former Councilor Phyllis Odom, whose late husband is the park’s namesake, shared her gratitude.
"I'm so thankful for all of you to come out and share in this occasion," former Councilor Phyllis Odom said. "My husband is shining down today, thank you so much."
The new park is located at 3230 8th Street in Tuscaloosa.
