City of Tuscaloosa Secures Updated Count for 2020 Census
September 26, 2023
The City of Tuscaloosa has secured an updated 2020 decennial census count from the Census Bureau, reflecting that the City’s population in 2020 was greater than 100,000 people.
In the original 2020 census count, which occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Census Bureau counted the City’s total population at 99,600.
After the University of Alabama and the City worked together to identify an undercount of at least 1,100 residents living in University on-campus housing, the City submitted a review case to the 2020 Post-Census Group Quarters Review program.
As of Monday, September 18, the review has been accepted, successfully bringing the official 2020 Tuscaloosa population count to over 100,000 residents.
“Census population estimates are a critical factor in determining federal grant allocations, as well as creating opportunities for economic development,” Mayor Walt Maddox said. “I’m pleased that the Census Bureau has accepted our review to more accurately reflect the tremendous growth in our City over the past few years, even during the time of the pandemic, as this data will continue to make a difference for our schools, our roads, economic development, our seniors and more in the years to come."
Since 2020, the annual Census estimates were 109,000 in 2021 and 110,600 for 2022.
